Let’s Talk Nostalgia: A Time Machine for Your Soul
by Nicole Taylor on Dec 27, 2024
Let’s face it: nostalgia can hit you like a rogue wave. One minute you’re folding laundry, and the next, you’re headlining an imaginary concert in your bedroom, belting out a song you haven’t heard since the early 2000s. For me, nostalgia sneaks in during the most mundane moments—like when my playlist shuffles and suddenly it’s 2003 again. The song takes over, and I’m instantly transported to a time when my biggest worries were whether my eyeliner was even. Spoiler alert: it absolutely wasn’t.
There’s something magical about nostalgia, isn’t there? It’s not just about remembering the good times. It’s about reconnecting with past versions of ourselves—the versions who were simpler, braver, or just a little more carefree. For me, every time I sing along to a long-forgotten favorite, I feel that younger version of me rolling her eyes at how much I stress over things now. I can almost hear her say, “Chill out. You survived pleather pants, awkward school dances, and dial-up internet. You’ll survive this too.”
But music is just the tip of the nostalgia iceberg. It shows up in unexpected places—like when I stumble across an old sweatshirt from high school buried in my closet. It still smells faintly of mall food court pizza (don’t ask me how, but it’s oddly comforting). Or when I bite into something that tastes exactly like my mom’s spaghetti from the nights when she didn’t have the energy to make it “the right way.” These little moments are powerful reminders that life wasn’t always this complicated. And if it wasn’t then, maybe it doesn’t have to be now.
For me, one of the most nostalgic moments happens when I rewatch my all-time favorite movies. 10 Things I Hate About You and Ever After are on constant rotation when I need a hit of that good old serotonin. Watching them feels like slipping into a cozy blanket woven with teenage dreams, dramatic monologues, and a whole lot of 90s-early 2000s charm. Every line I know by heart reminds me of the days when I didn’t just watch movies—I let them shape my imagination and ideas about love, courage, and humor.
Nostalgia doesn’t always stick to the warm and fuzzy moments, though. It can be a double-edged sword. Spend too much time reminiscing, and suddenly you’re Googling where to buy butterfly clips, jelly sandals, or whatever questionable trend dominated your youth. (Please don’t, though. Some things are better left in the past. Trust me, pleather pants were bad enough the first time around.) But when you let nostalgia be a fleeting visit instead of a permanent move, it becomes a gift. It reminds you of your resilience, your joy, and yes, your once-debatable fashion choices.
You see, nostalgia isn’t just about remembering who you were; it’s about remembering who you still are. It’s easy to lose sight of that in the day-to-day chaos of adulting. But those little blasts from the past remind you that your core self is still there, underneath all the to-do lists and responsibilities. The same person who once wore platform flip-flops with pride, who stayed up all night making mixed CDs, or who practiced signing their crush’s last name in the margins of a notebook still exists. Sure, you’ve grown, but you’ve carried pieces of that person with you along the way.
I’ve learned to lean into nostalgia when it hits. When that pang of longing for the “good old days” comes, I don’t fight it. I sing the song. I wear the sweatshirt. I watch the cheesy rom-com I once knew by heart. Nostalgia isn’t about living in the past—it’s about taking a moment to honor where you’ve been and who you’ve become. It’s like looking at an old scrapbook of your life, flipping through the pages and smiling at the memories, before closing it and moving forward with renewed energy.
Of course, not every moment deserves a comeback. I’ll happily relive a good Lizzie McGuire sing-along or rewatch Clueless for the 100th time, but I draw the line at resurrecting frosted tips or glittery body gel. Nostalgia is best enjoyed as a highlight reel, not a full reboot of your past.
And honestly, isn’t that the beauty of it? Nostalgia reminds us that we’ve always been a mix of messy and magnificent. It shows us that we’ve survived embarrassing fashion trends, awkward teen phases, and the intensity of first loves. We came out on the other side, stronger and maybe a little wiser (or at least with better eyeliner skills).
So, the next time nostalgia sneaks up on you, don’t be afraid to embrace it. Let it remind you of the joy you felt during simpler times, the dreams you once had, and the resilience that got you through. Use it as a chance to reconnect with the parts of yourself you might’ve forgotten amid the hustle of daily life.
And if you’re ever tempted to take a walk down memory lane and stay there too long, just remember: pleather pants weren’t great the first time around.

Let’s Hear from You
What’s your favorite nostalgic moment? Is it a song, a movie, or a scent that takes you back? Maybe it’s a recipe, an old toy, or even a memory of a wildly bad haircut (I had bangs that deserved their own apology letter). Share your nostalgic moments in the comments or tag me on social media. Let’s celebrate the little pieces of our past that make us who we are today.
